CHRISTMAS DÉCOR—WORK WITH WHAT YOU HAVE

christmas decorating

I will start this post by admitting that I am a holiday addict.  Doesn’t matter the holiday, I will find a way to celebrate as long as it’s part of my traditions.  Christmas is no different, this year being our first Christmas in our new house!  I was hoping to go crazy with the décor, but it seemed like a lot of work.  Guess we’ll leave that for 2017.

STYLING NOVEMBER

dog

And just like that… it’s November.  How did we get here so fast?  It feels like yesterday was April and flowers were blooming.  Now all the leaves are falling and it’s getting colder by the second.  Time really does fly when you’re over 30.  I mean, 20.  😉

This month is super exciting because we get to host Friendsgiving (yearly tradish) for the first time in our new home!  It’s the only reason I don’t decorate for Christmas until after.  But how do you decorate for that time between Halloween and Christmas?  Easy… leave the pumpkins and fall décor, and take out the Halloween accessories.  Violà!  Scroll down to check out some small changes I made, including adding that beautiful wool throw we picked up while in Iceland.  Enjoy!

HOW TO STYLE A GENDER-NEUTRAL MANTLE: PART 2

gender-neutral mantle

I guess by now it’s safe to say that I am very into gender-neutral everything.  For me it is as simple as I live with a man and want our home to look like us, and not me.  Meaning, I want our home to look like both a man and a woman live there.  This is something that most people really don’t think about when decorating their spaces.  Let’s face itwhen you live with a man, it’s the woman who mostly does the shopping and decorating, and this is where girly everything starts.

HOME STYLE: CARLA DAVIS

living room

Today I would like to welcome to the blog one of my favorite submissions yet!  Carla Davis reached out to me with a photo of her living room enclosed.  Once I saw it I had to do a double take.  Is that a disco ball I see?  Is this real?!  I immediately knew her home would be the right fit for our u style series.

SECRET TO WATERING A FIDDLE LEAF FIG TREE & PERUVIAN CACTUS

Styling weapon number one: plants.  All decorators, stylists and interior designers rely on plants to bring life to a space.  We all love them—real or fake—but some can’t manage to keep them alive!  Let me tell you a little secret…there isn’t one rule for keeping plants alive.  Sure, there are several things that are basic knowledge, like water and sunlight, but it also depends on the environment the plant is in.

HOW WE CHOSE THE RIGHT SIZE RUG FOR OUR LIVING ROOM

living room

I’m not a rule-follower by any means.  If you know me well enough, you’ll quickly find out that I’m just not a fan of them.  There are many rules when it comes to decorating, styling and interior design that people follow religiously.  Even though they’re there to make things generally look good, some I believe can be adjusted to fit your needs and the needs of your home—finding the right size rug for your living room is one of them.

HOW TO DEFINE THE FOCAL POINT IN A ROOM

living room mantle

The focal point in a room is by definition the first thing you notice when you first walk into a room.  Depending on where you are, it can be anything from oversized art, to a beautifully styled bookcase.  Defining the focal point in a room can at times be very easy, since it’s something that your eyes immediately gravitate to.  Other times, the focal point is not so obvious and you have to create it!

living room

I am excited to give you all a glance at Nicky Sinclair’s world!  Her submission quickly caught my eye and really stood out as a result of the ultra-feminine and glamorous photos of her home.  Apart from her very clear love of all things pink and sparkly, Nicky is a creative soul who is not only a fashion illustrator who runs an Etsy shop, but she is also about to embark onto the next stage of her fairytale dream.  She will be opening her own business soon, Composition Lanean online boutique of curated small home accessories that go hand in hand with her unique style.  Talk about girl power!  Nicky is running two businesses while creating a home for her and her husband!
