HOW TO DO A DATE NIGHT IN

When it comes to relationships, one of the biggest misconceptions is that you must leave the house in order to have a date.  Well my friends I’m here to tell you that you’ve been lied to.  When your partner travels a lot, anything can count as a date and we’ve been doing this since the beginning of our relationship!

When your time with a loved one is limited, you find ways to get creative to make that time “quality time.”  We’ve managed to become experts at this, often turning a typical boring weeknight into a date night in.  An example of this was our 1 year wedding anniversary.

We had so many things going on back-to-back after getting back from Iceland in October and one of them was our wedding anniversary.  I really wanted to do something special for us, but I was also exhausted from our trip!  Thankfully, my husband felt exactly the same and we decided to just stay home and cook something special together.

While it was still early, I set the table using accessories from our wedding, such as: candlesticks, vases, toasting glasses, and our cake stands.  Earlier in the day I got cupcakes from The Cupcake Collection, which are the peeps that made our wedding cakes.  (I even scored a few of our wedding flavors!)  The accessories help set the mood and created a special vignette.  The flowers and card also made it special because he surprised me and well… I’m a girl and a sucker for gifts.  Once the table was set, we got right down to business.  (Not what you think, people!)

The date began with a yummy drink—a Rosemary Gin cocktail.  I found the recipe on Our Body Book and it was crazy good.  I also put together a little cheese & charcuterie board for us to enjoy while cooking.  Music also set the mood, along with our fireplace.

On the menu: porchetta, veggies, and hasselback sweet potatoes, all paired with a nice California red blend.

How to do a date night in?  Simple:
1. Set the mood with some candles, music or even fire up the fireplace
2. Set the table first to get that out of the way and make it special; decant the wine if necessary
3. Get comfortable—it’s a date night IN so look cute, but also get comfy
4. Start with some light appetizers and a cocktail—this will hold you over while cooking together
5. Be open to spontaneity—dance, laugh, don’t put so much thought into it, just go with the flow
6. Try experimenting with a new recipe
7. End the night with something sweet 😉

A date night in can take any form, but always remember that whether it’s a movie night, a game night, a dinner, or whatever you fancy, you can take a bit of this and apply it to anything.  You will never fail with food and drinks.  Never!

xo,
Carla
